Integration Software Engineer – Healthcare, HL7, FHIR UK/ India

The team are seeking an Integration Software Engineer to work on a digital project focusing on citizen access to health and social care information and resources.  This project is a spin off from Mindwave’s Personal Health Records Programme and so will also include providing integration support across PHRs. 

Your responsibilities:

As a Healthcare Integration Software Engineer you will take a lead role in connecting and advancing our integration capabilities with EHR and other Healthcare related systems. Building integrations with third-parties to link their data to our existing and future products based on standardized formats such as HL7 and FHIR.

You will work with the team to develop robust and interoperable backend services that communicate seamlessly with the enterprise health systems, using HL7 2.x, HL7 3.x, HL7 FHIR and IHE integration profile standards.

Reporting to the Chief Technical Officer you will:

  • Write and maintain technical procedures and documentation for the application interfaces developed.

  • Work in an agile, object-oriented, team environment with version control, change management and continuous improvement protocols.

  • Apply HL7 standards (v2.x, v3.x & FHIR), techniques, and implementation guides to enable data integration across public health and healthcare systems.

  • Work with project managers, developers, and end users to ensure business requirements are met.

  • Interact with clients to understand integration need and provide the required interface.

  • Implement quality assurance testing standards and processes.

  • Test and validate implemented interfaces based on buisness requirements.

  • Validate messages using automated and manual tool sets.

  • Maintain and support existing interfaces.


Skills and experience – must haves:

  • 2+ years hands on experience with healthcare interoperability and messaging standards, including but not limited to HL7 2.x, HL7 3.x, HL7 FHIR, IHE integration profiles and technical framework.

  • Experience working with SOAP and REST based web services

  • Significant experience and firm understanding of API designs (working with REST APIs, XML, XSLT, JSON).

  • Experience with service-oriented architecture and enterprise authentication (ADFS, OAuth, LDAP, JWT)

  • Demonstratable knowledge of scripting languages (e.g Groovy, JavaScript, .NET)

  • Strong understanding of XML technologies (XML, XSD, XSL/XSLT)

  • Working knowledge of networking protocols (e.g. TCP/IP, HTTP, FTP, SOAP, …)

  • Skilled in developing scripts that support the transformation of data to and from various messaging definitions

  • Ability to explain data integration ideas and HL7 concepts clearly

  • Need good experience in HL7 data mappings and troubleshooting of interfaces during pre and post integration (Production)

  • Ability to analyse business problems and propose effective solutions

  • Experience working with interface engines and clinical workflows or healthcare workflows

  • Experience with developing HL7 interfaces using Mirth Connect (or other EHR Interoperability Technology)


  • Knowledge of healthcare / hospital environments a plus.

  • Knowledge of standards-based vocabulary and terminology including SNOMED-CT and LOINC

  • Knowledge of OpenEHR Standards, including Clinical Knowledge Manager (CKM)

  • Comfortably working in a Linux development environment

  • Experience with version control (git and gitflow)

  • Experience working in an agile software development

  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes

  • Experience developing/working with data warehouses and/or data lakes

  • Experience with Relational and Non-relational/NoSQL Databases
